How to cook boiled eggs and prevent skin from sticking on the eggs

Boiling eggs to perfection and ensuring they peel easily can be a bit of an art, but with the right approach, it’s simple. Start by placing your eggs in a single layer at the bottom of a saucepan, covering them with cold water. This helps prevent the eggs from cracking as they gradually warm up. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, immediately remove the pan from heat and cover it with a lid. Allow the eggs to sit in the hot water for 9 to 12 minutes, depending on how firm you like your yolks.

As the eggs cook, prepare an ice bath by filling a bowl with cold water and ice. After the eggs have finished cooking, transfer them to the ice bath. This sudden cooling stops the cooking process, keeping the yolks from overcooking and turning green. It also makes the eggs easier to peel by causing the egg whites to contract slightly away from the shell.

For best results, use eggs that are at least a week old, as fresher eggs tend to be harder to peel. Adding a teaspoon of salt or a splash of vinegar to the boiling water can also help prevent the shells from sticking. When you’re ready to peel the eggs, gently tap them on a hard surface and roll them to crack the shell. Peeling under running water can help remove any stubborn bits. With these tips, you’ll have perfectly boiled eggs that peel like a dream.
